The metal slide rest lathe was invented by Jacques de Vaucanson around the 1751 period. That sparked a revolution in lathe design and many other types of lathes were invented which helped modernize the world we know today.

There a lot of different lathe manufacturers and it just depends on what your looking for. Do you want the old fashioned hand and eye lathe or the more modern CNC operated lathe? It all depends on the application they are being used for.
